Master FX has built its reputation developing reliable, high-output hazers with the even coverage usually seen in oil-based systems—except theirs are water-based. The Mystic series—including the Mystic, Mystic Mini, and Mystic 2—has rapidly become the go-to choice for hazers, thanks to its intuitive controls, impressive output, and versatility.
For this comparison, we’re focusing on the Mystic 2. The Nebulous and Obscure fluids were specifically developed for the Mystic Series, with two operating modes optimized for each fluid that adjusts the heater’s vaporization temperature so you're getting the most out of your haze fluid with no excess moisture.

Why Do Different Haze Fluids Exist?
Different events call for different atmospheres, and that’s where fluid choice comes in. The type of haze fluid you use impacts not just the density of the atmosphere but also how long it lingers in the air. Hang time is crucial—too short, and your haze dissipates too quickly; too long, and it can overwhelm the space.
Master FX offers six haze fluids to cover a wide range of needs. For this comparison, we focused on their two premier options, Nebulous and Obscure. These fluids are specifically designed for the Mystic series, with unique operating modes that fine-tune the heater’s vaporization temperature for each fluid, ensuring maximum efficiency and minimal excess moisture.
About The Demo
To put these haze fluids to the test, we set up two Mystic 2 units at Zouk Nightclub in Las Vegas. With over 26,000 square feet and a capacity of more than 2,000, Zouk was the perfect venue to see how these fluids would perform in a large-scale environment.
One of the standout features we noticed with the Mystic 2 was its extremely quick warm-up time. Within just three minutes, the entire room was filled with haze, giving us a clear demonstration of the machine’s output capabilities. This setup provided a real-world look at how the Nebulous and Obscure fluids can shape the atmosphere in high-demand environments like this.
Master FX Obscure Haze Fluid
We started with the Obscure fluid, which is designed to create a thick, immersive atmosphere. Right away, we noticed the fluid producing more defined plumes and clouds in the air. Its dense composition makes bright beams and sharp laser effects stand out with incredible clarity, adding a rich texture to the room.
Obscure is perfect for environments where you want a dramatic, moody vibe, like clubs or theatrical moments that demand a more intense atmosphere. Even in a large venue like Zouk, the fluid maintained consistent coverage, enhancing the lighting effects with a deep, immersive haze that truly transforms the space.
Master FX Nebulous Haze Fluid
Next up was Nebulous, which was noticeably thinner and lighter compared to Obscure. This fluid offers more visibility in the space and can be almost unnoticeable when beams aren’t active—ideal for events that want clean beamage without a heavy, cloudy atmosphere. Nebulous is perfect for concerts and performances where the focus is on enhancing the light show without overpowering the environment. With up to 2 hours of hang time, it provides a lasting effect while still offering the benefits of being water-based—clean, odorless, and leaving no residue behind.
What really stands out is that despite being water-based, the haze remains impressively even—something water-based hazes typically struggle with compared to their oil-based counterparts. This makes Nebulous a game-changer for those looking for smooth, consistent coverage without the downsides of oil-based fluids.
Side-by-Side Comparison: Obscure vs. Nebulous
When comparing Obscure and Nebulous, the differences in atmosphere are immediately noticeable. It's pretty cool that they are both produced by the same machines. Obscure brings dense, heavy clouds that enhance bright beams and add texture to the room, making it ideal for environments where you want a dramatic, immersive vibe. On the other hand, Nebulous offers a much subtler haze that remains hardly visible when beams aren’t passing through, perfect for shows that prioritize clarity and don’t need a thick, cloudy look.
In our side-by-side video, you can see how the two fluids affect the room’s atmosphere. Obscure dominates with bold, defined plumes, while Nebulous creates a smooth, even haze that lets the light do the talking without overwhelming the space (even with twice the amount of fixtures on!).
Both fluids perform impressively in their respective roles, and the Mystic 2's optimized modes ensure each fluid delivers its best. The choice ultimately comes down to the specific needs of your event—whether you want striking beams cutting through dense fog or a lighter touch that keeps the focus on the performance.
